British English Accent Reduction Coach Explains: What’s the difference between British English and American English
First of all I would like to point out to you all that of course there are some differences in vocabulary and idiomatic expressions, but in reality the differences are not that great. The biggest differences that I have noticed when hanging out with American friends seem to occur when talking about cars, food and cooking. For example ask a British person and an American person what a scone is and how it is pronounced and you will likely have a lively conversation of discovery!
But in this article, I really wanted to draw everyone’s attention to the difference in the accents. To illustrate this take for example the following words: coffee, (the famous) Harry Potter, hot, and doctor. They are all common words but the ‘o’ sound in these words and many others is pronounced very differently in British English when compared to the American English pronunciation.
In British the ‘o’ sound in these words is pronounced using the /ɒ/ sound but in American English the pronunciation is completely different and uses the /ɑː/ sound. Of course you may not be familiar with the difference in these 2 sounds, but, don’t worry I have a produced a video for you all. So please enjoy, here is the link here:
